Not content with warming the stage for Oasis at Slane Castle this summer and playing to a giddy audience at the Guinness Storehouse on Arthurs Day, Kasabian are making a third visit next month their largest Irish headliner gig at The O2. And quite right too. Current album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, a follow-up to 2006s patchy Empire, marked a return to blustering form and finally saw the band shrug off early accusations that they were mere Madchester charlatans (pardon the pun). Marrying flourishes of krautrock, Bollywood, gospel choirs and Ennio Morricone-style noodlings, the record proved that theyve forged a signature sound Nov 27, The O2, East Link Bridge, North Wall Quay D1, 6.30pm, 33.60. Tel: 0818 719 300. www.kasabian.co.uk The Invention Of Lying (15A) Running time: 100min 12 metrolife Friday, October 2, 2009 Driving Aphrodite (12A) Running time: 95min It was probably a good move ditching original title My Life In Ruins otherwise this sorry rubble of a romcom would have had kick me written all over it. Award- winning My Big Fat Greek Wedding star/ writer Nia Vardalos plays Georgia (pictured below), an unlikeably uptight Greek- American thirtysomething who returns to her homeland after failing to land a job in the US as an ancient history academic. Instead, she works out her intellectual frustrations as a tourist guide, inflicting her dry-as-dust lectures on a cringeworthy gaggle of tourist clichs, sorry, clients: were talking an Aussies-clutching-tinnies- of-Fosters level of cultural observation here. Georgia seriously needs to find her kefi (Greek for mojo), before we and her tour group find the Exit, and it arrives in the swarthy form of her brooding monosyllabic driver called, I kid you not, Poupi Kakas. Think Carry On without the sophisticated humour or enlightened views on foreign stereotyping. LI-Z Pandorum (16) Running time: 108min Apparently a Pandorum is a psychological disorder brought on by the claustrophobia of space resulting in delusions of grandeur. You what? The rest of this sci-fi thriller, from the team behind Resident Evil, is even less comprehensible. Corporal Bower (Ben Foster) and Lieutenant Payton (cut-price Harrison Ford, Dennis Quaid) wake from cryogenic sleep to find themselves on a spaceship launched from Earth in the year 2174 to settle on a new planet. As Bower sets out on an (inexplicable) mission to reach the ships reactor, he finds its been commandeered by flesh eating creatures. There are some excellent fight scenes and a bit of monster gore, but the absence of a discernible storyline makes it little more than a noisy TV movie. Zena Alkayat The Army Of Crime (no cert) Running time: 139min The Beachs Virginie Ledoyen is luminous in this World War II drama based on true events. Shes Mline, the wife of Armenian poet Missak Manouchian. When the Germans occupy Paris, Missak is arrested and taken away. On his return, Missak becomes increasingly politicised and joins a group of men and women determined to fight for France. If you know the story of the group the police labelled The Army Of Crime, youll know there are grim scenes ahead. But this dwells longer on scenes of family loyalty and love than it does on torture and execution, following several characters to reveal their personal motivation. Its plodding in places but moving in others. An educational and modestly rewarding watch. Anna Smith Birdwatchers (15) Running time: 104min An indigenous tribe clashes with white landowners in this Brazilian drama. Sick of living on a cramped reservation, a group of Guarani-Kaiow camp out on a patch of farmland, reasoning that it was the home of their ancestors. The men are offered casual cash-in-hand work but they turn it down: they dont want to leave the women to the mercy of the authorities. But these women are feisty, making mincemeat of the guard assigned to keep an eye on the property, teasing him about his tackle when he takes a dip in the river. The hesitant relationship that develops between him and one of the women is based on mutual need but its still affecting. The story isnt desperately gripping. But this is still an interesting insight into the Guarani-Kaiows real-life struggle for survival. AS Toy Story 3D (PG) Running time: 81min No, not the long-awaited Buzz and Woody threequel (thats out next year) but an appetite-whetter for it. This is the 3D-ed version of the first, ground-breaking 1995 computerised animated feature that today seems as cutting- edge as ever. As director John Lasseter says: At Pixar, weve always created 3D worlds; weve just been looking at them with one eye closed until now. LI-Z S o far Ricky Gervaiss big screen appearances havent exactly wowed hes played the token boo hiss Brit in Night At The Museum and a decent straight man in Ghost Town. Still, youd expect more of his first self-penned feature, wouldnt you? Well, dont. The best bit about this comedy is its cunning Liar, Liar-in-reverse concept. In a world where theres no such thing as deceit or flattery or fiction, Mark Bellison (Gervais) has a tough time. Hes a tubby, single, frustrated screen writer, or a fat faggot loser according to his secretary, who one day suddenly discovers he is the only person alive with the ability to lie. As a result he gets rich and successful, dates a gorgeous girl (Jennifer Garner) who had previously rejected him because she didnt want ugly, fat little kids with snub noses and tearfully tells his dying mum shell get her own mansion in the sky prompting him to be hailed as the first Messiah. However, taking on big themes of love, sex, religion and death doesnt make Gervais the new Woody Allen (even if he uses a similar font on his credits). The comedy of insult quickly tires and you never believe his character truly loves Garners shallow beauty fascist any more than you believe shed voluntarily kiss him without being paid. That said, go in with (very) low expectations and they may just be surpassed. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh CLUBBING Tu-Ki / DJ Yoda / Lee Curtiss & Ryan Crosson Tu-Ki is one of the most talented Irish DJs. A four-time winner of the Irish DMC DJ championships as well as the 2007 winner of the Movida World Mixing Championships, his skills on the decks are unquestionable. However, unlike many turntablists, Tu-Ki also has broad tastes and wide knowledge of electronic music, a product of years spent digging through record store crates. This is audible on his debut mix CD, Pre:Seed, which unites old-school electro and hip-hop with contemporary beats. If you want to hear a real hip-hop hero, get down to the Button Factory for the CD launch. Tonight, Choice Cuts, The Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar D2, 11pm, 10. DJ Yoda (pictured), aka Duncan Beiny, is a true entertainer. Sampling unlikely sources he once fused the theme tune from Emmerdale Farm with hip-hop beats Yoda makes real party music.
