TABHAIR AN FHISNIS CANNACHTA IS G LEAT AR AN AOINE, 2 DEIREADH FMHAIR 2009 Lisbon Treaty Sinn Fin leader Gerry Adams pushes for a No vote in tomorrows referendum in Dublin yesterday. Yes and No groups made last-minute efforts to sway voters before a ban came into force at midnight Picture: AFP Taoiseach vows: No Lisbon 3 if treaty rejected TAOISEACH Brian Cowen has ruled out a third referendum on the Lisbon Treaty if the controversial charter is rejected again. As both sides in the debate made their final pleas to voters, Mr Cowen warned a second final defeat would plunge the EU into uncertainty. Well there wont be a Lisbon 3, I think thats for sure, he said. With just one full day to go until polling, the Taoiseach said the vote was one of the most important politi- cal decisions of our time. He said Ireland faced the prospect of a two-tier Europe if the charter was thrown out for a second time. I think whats clear is that we face into a period of extraordinary uncer- tainty in Europe, for Europe, and what direction it would then take, he said. We could well see the de- velopment of a two-speed Europe. BY colm kelpie last chance: cowen group Libertas, said Ireland has nothing to lose and everything to gain by voting No. The businessman claimed the EU reform package had not changed since it was rejected last year. We cannot possibly get a worse deal than what is in the Lisbon Trea- ty. We can definitely get a better deal, he said. Labour leader Eamon Gilmore urged voters not to use their anger over recessionary cutbacks as a bat to beat the Government with. Sinn Fin leader Gerry Adams said rejecting the charter would secure a more democratic EU. If we want to have decency and accountability and if we want a so- cial Europe then come out... and vote No, Mr Adams said. An opinion poll last weekend gave the Yes side a clear lead, with 55 per cent of voters saying they would vote Yes and 27 per cent No. Pro- and anti-treaty groups made a last-ditch effort to woo voters before the broadcasting ban at midnight. Mr Cowen said concerns about the treaty had been addressed by legal guarantees commitments from EU leaders that each member state would retain a commissioner and the Treaty would not effect Irish neutral- ity, tax rates or family law. The assurances had changed the dynamic of the referendum, he said. Declan Ganley, from anti-treaty Fr Ted creator gives his blessing FATHER Ted creator Graham Linehan has given his blessing via Twitter for pro- Lisbon campaigners to use images of Crilly & co. After being alerted on the micro-blogging site that No campaigners had hijacked the image of Craggy Islands most famous naysayer Fr Jack Hackett much to the anger of the actor who played him, Frank Kelly Mr Linehan said Yes campaigners should do the same. Pro- Lisbon Treaty campaigners in Ireland! Feel free to use any Father Ted images on placards & slogan Up with this sort of thing, he wrote in a tweet, before correcting himself: Except for Father Jack. He could go either way so best not to use him at all. However, one of Mr Linehans followers later made the valid point that Father Jack would be very pro-Lesbian Treaty. Car shop in poll positionA CAR showroom was gearing up yesterday as one of the most unusual voting stations for the Lisbon Treaty referendum. Some of the countrys best-heeled voters will cast their ballots on the EU reform package at the Ballsbridge Motors centre in south Dublin tomorrow. The site already lays claim to a little piece of European transport history, as the first place a Volkswagen car was built outside Germany. Seamus Ryan, general manager, said the firm will be pulling eight cars out of their Mercedes showroom to make way for polling booths. They were asked to provide space for the ballot because the nearby Ballsbridge College of Further Education, which usually acts as the polling station, was being renovated. craggy: Fr Jack
