Clutching her young son, Eoin, in her arms, Triona ONeill managed to flee to higher ground before the tidal wave flattened villages and swept cars and people out to sea, killing at least 99 and leaving dozens missing. Triona, originally from Limerick, also helped save the lives of countless others after helping evacuate the resort hotel where she worked. The death toll from the tsunami, which was triggered by a powerful undersea earthquake, is expected to rise. Survivors fled the fast-churning water for high- er ground on the South Pacific islands and re- mained huddled there hours after the quake, with a magnitude between 8.0 and 8.3, struck around dawn on Tuesday. Four tsunami waves up to six metres high roared ashore on American Samoa, reaching up to 1.5km inland. Samoan prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele Maliele- gaoi said: So much has gone. So many people are gone. Im so shocked, so saddened by all the loss. Less than 24 hours later, another strong earth- quake rocked western Indonesia, briefly trigger- ing a tsunami alert for countries along the Indian Ocean. The 7.6-magnitude quake toppled build- ings, cut power and triggered a landslide on Su- matra island. At least 75 people were reported killed, with the death toll expected to rise as hun- dreds more remain trapped under rubble.
