Television What To Watch Forgotten but not gone: The Irish workers in England Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day The Forgotten Irish TV3, 9pm There is no more fitting time to show this stirring documentary series about the countless men and women who made the short trip across the Irish Sea to work in England after WWII. The money they sent home kept Ireland afloat in the 1950s, but now, old and vulnerable, they risk becoming the forgotten Irish. The first episode looks at those who went to Birmingham to work, and reveals just how tough life was for people who were essentially seen as second-class citizens. Something for todays Irish people to think about, perhaps? The Secret Life Of Twins BBC1, 9pm In the concluding part of this fascinating two-part documentary, the Van Tulleken twins continue their investigation into what makes twins both similar and different, and what research into split embryos can reveal about every person, and the nature of identity. They travel to mass twin gatherings in Ohio and London, which are bizarre, to say the least, and draw some interesting conclusions from their study. He started doing stand-up for a bet and has gone on to appear on shows such as Have I Got News For You and QI. His new series, Its Only A Theory, starts on the BBC this week Interview by Graeme Green Im always surprised about what upsets people, the limits some people have adult people who claim to be intelligent Did you really get into comedy by way of a dare? Yes. I was in a bar drinking with some guys and I can be kind of funny when I get pissy about stuff. I was having trouble with my girlfriend and I was broke so I was just ranting a bit. People in the bar were laughing. Looking back, they may have been laughing at my American accent, but they were oddly encouraging, especially for British people, and were saying: You know, they do a comedy night here?. I never collected on the bet. Well, actually I did. I was so broke at the time I went straight to the shop and bought crisps and chocolate. What other careers would you have been tempted to try? At the time, I was giving serious consideration to donating well not donating, but selling some sperm. Somebody told me you can sell it and I was blowing it out for free. I thought, I could earn at least 30 a day there. Fortunately, I didnt have to go in that direction. Good job the comedy came first then, so to speak. Yes, absolutely (laughs). How long have you lived in Britain? Off and on for 11 years. Britains like a girlfriend thing, on again, off again. A love/hate thing? Yes. Its like its my partner and I love it but its an alcoholic. Its fun when its drinking the booze and not so fun when its recovering. Are you excited about co- hosting your own TV show? Im excited because my co-hosting partner, Andy Hamilton, is a very able man. Hes the cat who came up with the idea in the first place. We have guests each week and investigate things like chaos theory, popular theories of aging, you know, those sort of things. Do you have any of your own theories on life? I envy people who Nigga]. You call them controversies, but what would comedy be if middle- class white people werent offended? Do comedians miss having George Bush around? Rich Hall (American comedian) said years ago, during Bushs first year in office, theres no greater gift from the comedy gods than this guy. And comedy hasnt recovered from Bushs absence. Its much harder to get down on Obama. Getting down on Gordon Brown is old-hat and David Cameron just seems like a barking puppy every time Labour does something, hes like: Ruff, ruff, ruff! Apart from gag material, were you happy to see Bush go and Obama take the job? I dont really have much faith. The political system is fine but it has people in it. And I also believe that to attain any kind of high office, you have to make friends with the devil, so a part of me is still waiting for the other shoe to drop with Obama. can get it down to one sentence, their theories on life. A homeless guy came up to me the other day and said: Can I have 10 to sort out my life? I said: F***, man, I wish I could sort out my life with just 10. Heres 15, man you go for it. The BBCs been through the mill a bit recently, with the whole Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand scandal. Are they more cautious with comedy now? Its like being a kid and seeing another kid getting a spanking. Everybody is a bit anxious for a while after that. I do think uptight people seem to have more control than they ought to. Im always surprised about what upsets people, the limits some people have adult people who claim to be intelligent. Youve had a few controversies yourself.
