22 METROSPORT Wednesday, September 30, 2009 D gaa Cahill calls on Jayo to return Capital support: Clockwise from left, Katie Taylor, Barry Cahill, Bernard Dunne and David Gillick in Dublin yesterday as the city was named Europes Capital of Sport for 2010 DUBLIN footballer Barry Cahill has revealed that team-mate Jason Sherlock has yet to decide whether to continue with the Sky Blues next year or bring his sterling career to a close. Sherlock is the only remaining member of the 1995 All-Ireland winning team still on active duty but his last game was not one to remember as the Dubs were steamrollered by All-Ireland champions Kerry in the quarter-final and Sherlock was withdrawn early in the first half. Cahill maintains that Sherlock still has an important role to play, even though he will be 34 in January, and hopes the St Oliver Plunketts man will not follow the lead of Ciarn Whelan, who announced his decision to quit last month. He is still playing to the standard of an inter-county footballer, said Cahill. He looks after himself very well and is professional in Gaelic terms. I am sure he will make some sort of announcement over the next few weeks but Id be hopeful enough that he will stay involved next year. Meanwhile, Cahill has noted the comments of Anthony Daly, who wants football stars Conal Keaney and Shane Ryan to join his hurling revolution. Cahill does not believe that a dual commitment at inter- county level is practical any more and so is praying that the duo pin their colours to the football mast. I think the way it is going, to try and win the All-Ireland, it is pretty much 24-7 for eight or nine months of the year, the St Brigids man said. If you are involved in another sport, I dont think you would be up to the same standard as if you were concentrating on one. ThE flow of GAA stars returning from the AFL is continuing, with Armaghs Kevin Dyas the second player to leave Collingwood in a week. Dyas follows Downs Martin Clarke in quitting Aussie Rules, but the Melbourne-based club has vowed to continue its so-called Irish Experiment, with 17-year- old Kildare prospect Paul Cribbin set to join the Pies in November 2010. Well continue to have a network operating for us in Ireland, and if they see players they consider to be prospects, well still be positive said Collingwood chief Geoff Walsh. Gillick yearns for home WORLD championship 400metres finalist David Gillick is hoping that the selection of Dublin as European Capital of Sport will attract a stream of investment that will enable the Ballinteer man return to Ireland to train. Gillick has been based at Loughborough University in the UK for the past couple of years and has flourished since making the switch. If similar facilities were available in the capital, though, he would return and he pinpoints the Abbotstown facility as the ideal venue. Weve got the Institute of Sport set up and if we can get a little more investment to develop the Abbotstown site, it would be great to bring Katie Taylor, Bernard Dunne, the soccer lads, the rugby lads under the one roof. Young people would get inspired and feed off each other and thats what its about, Gillick said. I would love to be training in Dublin. I was born and raised here and I love coming home. I dream of doing what I do in Dublin and fingers crossed I will. aTHLETICS Liverpool have no answer as Jovetic hits purple patch TEENAGE sensation Stevan Jovetic struck at the double last night to send Liverpool crashing to Champions League defeat in Florence. Fiorentinas 19-year-old striker from Montenegro tucked away two first-half chances as the Reds struggled to contain their Group E rivals. The Serie A side took the lead in the 28th minute when Cristiano Zanettis slick pass sent Jovetic surging past a static defence to beat Pepe Reina with a low finish. The Reds goalkeeper then needed to save well from a ferocious angled drive by Juan Vargas as Fiorentina sought to capitalise on their success. The home team were dominating the match and increased their lead eight minutes before half-time when Marco Marchionni crossed from the right and the ball found Vargas on the opposite flank. He whipped in a low cross and it was neatly deflected in at the near post by the alert Jovetic. Liverpool were brighter after the break but Sebastien Frey saved low to his right to deny Yossi Benayoun be- fore Lucas powered a free header just over the bar. Liverpool beat Hull 6-1 on Saturday but Fiorentina had not conceded a goal in their last three home games. And the Italians extended that run with relative ease to blow the group wide open with their deserved victory. heaven sent: Jovetic celebrates his first strike Picture: Action Images fIorEnTIna 2 LIvErpooL 0 Fiorentina: Frey, Comotto, Dainelli, Gamberini, Gobbi, Zanetti, Montolivo, Marchionni (de Silvestri 90), Jovetic, Vargas, Mutu (Donadel 80). MATCH FACTS CO-OWNERS George Gillett and Tom Hicks have issued a joint statement rubbishing reports that either party are preparing to sell their stake in Liverpool. The American billionaires, who each own 50 per cent of the Anfield club, have however reiterated their desire to bring in fresh investment. Reports gathered pace after Prince Faisal bin Fahad bin Abdulla of Saudi Arabia expressed a desire to buy a 50 per cent stake. But Gillett and Hicks say suggestions of a buy-out are wide of the mark. The statement read: The process is at an early stage, there is no agreement with any party and reports to the contrary are wholly inaccurate. Tam McManus and Mark Farren each wasted chances before Bohs took the lead with their first real attack on 18 minutes. Killian Brennan pounced on a loose ball in midfield to press forward and lay the ball off to Madden who shot past Ger Doherty from 12 yards. McManus then brought a super save from Brian Murphy before half-time. Madden was guilty of perhaps the miss of the season on 58 minutes when he rounded Doherty only to allow the ball to trickle past the post. Bohs are a point clear of Shamrock Rovers at the top ahead of Fridays trip to Tallaght Stadium. Cork City failed to take advantage of Derrys defeat as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Sligo Rovers to remain fourth. dErry CITy 0 boHEmIanS 1 By DANNy GRIFFIThS index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
