He paid every time but we were suspicious of his intentions, said a police spokesman in Beijing. There is a very beautiful girl working there, he had to keep coming. ZImbAbwe: A human rights activist and her co-accused cannot be tried now or in the future on terror charges because they were beaten and tortured in jail. Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku said he was issuing a permanent stay of prosecution in the case of Jestina Mukoko and eight others because their constitutional rights had been violated. PHIlIPPINes: Rescuers pulled the dead from rivers yesterday and thousands were without water, food and power as the death toll from the worst flooding in the north in more than four decades climbed to 100. Officials expect the toll to rise as rescuers reach villages blocked by debris since Tropical Storm Ketsana swept through over the weekend. GermANy: Chancellor Angela Merkels conservatives have vowed to seal a coalition deal with the pro-business Free Democrats after winning national elections. Mrs Merkels (pictured) win allowed her to end her four-year partnership with the Social Democrats. NortH KoreA: South Koreas Unification Ministry yesterday said the north has revised its constitution to give even more power to leader Kim Jong Il (pictured), allow the region to ditch communism and elevate his military first ideology. Iran fires new rocket that could hit IsraelBY Hossein JaseB Lift off: a long-range shahab-3 missile takes off during yesterdays tests Picture: AFP IRAN faced further global condemnation af- ter testing its longest-range missiles which could reach targets including Israel. The Shahab 3, surface-to-surface missile has a range of up to 2,000 km (1,250 miles), which would put Israel and US bases in the region within striking distance. All targets within the region, no matter where they are, will be within the range of these missiles, said Gen Hossein Salami, commander of Irans Revolutionary Guards air force. All the test-fired missiles managed to hit their targets without any errors and with preci- sion. The launches came just days ahead of talks between Iran and world leaders over the coun- trys controversial nuclear programme. Irans foreign ministry described the test as a mili- tary drill. There is no connection whatsoever with the nuclear programme, added spokesman Has- san Qashqavi. France called on Tehran to choose the path of cooperation and not that of confrontation by immediately ending these profoundly destabilising activities. But Irans defence minister warned Israel against launching any attack on the Islamic Republic, saying it would only speed up the Jewish states own demise. If this happens, which of course we do not foresee, its ultimate result would be that it ex- pedites the Zionist regimes last breath, said Ahmad Vahidi. Mr Vahidi, a former Revolutionary Guards commander, said that in the event of an Israeli attack its lifespan, which is today coming to an end, would be speeded up. He added that the Zionist regime, the term Iran uses for Is- rael, was on a slope of destruction. Hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also repeatedly predicted Israels downfall.
