There she was at a New York fash-bash doing whatever the most controversial woman in the history of rock (according to Rolling Stone) does in the loo, when her solitude was abruptly shattered. Mistaking her cubicles door for the venues exit, civilian Sebastian Karnaby burst in to find the startled star on the bog. Cue mayhem, as Love reportedly went nuts jumping on him, dragging him around by the arm and acting like a woman possessed. Lucky for Karnaby he didnt burst in on toilet temper tantrum queen, Cheryl Cole! Would Ma Cobain have reacted differently had her tormentor revealed his profession? Some celebs would have locked him in, demanding the pharmacist share out the tools of his trade. Keith Barker-Main PLANET CELEB Welcome To The World Of Courtney Love FIVE QUESTIONS FOR... Drag artist extraordinaire Panti, who performs her new show A Woman In Progress as part of this years Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival AND ANOTHER THING... What can theatre goers expect from A Woman In Progress? A shocking and horrible glimpse into the heart of darkness. Kidding! Its a funny and hopefully thought-provoking show about being an outsider, and how the things that make you an outsider, while challenging, are ultimately what make you a better and more interesting person. And everyone is an outsider at some time in their lives. It also has an amazing frock. Any one formative moment from your childhood when you suddenly realised the future would involve killer heels and sequinned dresses? My glamorous American aunt would arrive in a swirl of beige pant- suits and menthol cigarettes and take out presents wrapped like gifts in movies, and inside wed find new and amazing things, like a jumper, with a hood on it! All the other kids wanted an aunt like mine. I wanted to be my aunt. The Dublin Theatre Festival is a pretty strait- laced affair. Does it feel odd to be embraced by the mainstream? I take embraces wherever I can find them! Im starved of affection these days. Anyway, I suspect it feels odder for them than it does for me. Im used to odd. You were on presenter duties at Electric Picnic for Transmission Panti. Highs and lows? Low? Having to fill for 20 minutes while we tried to get Louis Walshs buggy through the mud and chaos to the stage. High? Seeing Louis finally squelching into the tent! As host of make-and-do-do [arts and crafts evening of sorts in Pantibar] you must have come across some rather curious artworks. Whats been the least and most inspired creations youve been presented with? I actually cant describe either in a newspaper that most people are reading shortly after breakfast. When you give people booze and plasticine, you realise they have very weird, very active, sexually charged imaginations. Thank God, or Id never get laid! However, Creation focuses on Darwins bereavement to a fault so those expecting a fully fledged biopic may be disappointed. It is an elegant but modest tribute to a family man albeit one who changed the world. AS Friday, September 25, 2009 metrolife 15 Set your brain to standby and youll just about suck up this glossy dollop of Total Recall-lite. Welcome to an alternative present day where were all lolling about at home in our jammies, our brains plugged into computers that remotely control our commercially manufactured surrogates: sexy, super-fit robotic representations of our flabby, pain-prone selves. The scanty script does absolutely nothing interesting with the idea, its main raison dtre being to get Bruce Willis back on screen with a digitally firmer jawline and full head of hair (a snort- inducing Ken doll hairpiece). Hes a detective with a boo-hoo past, charged with solving the conspiracy behind why said surrogates have begun to fatally malfunction. His seemingly anti- Hollywood wish to reconnect with his real wife, who hides her ageing self behind her youthful surrogate, is potentially touching for about a nano- second, until you clock that 54-year- old Bruces wife is played by 30-year- old ex-Bond girl Rosamund Pike. LI-Z Donnacha Costello is one of the few techno producers with the ability to change and develop. After a few well-received dance floor releases for D1 and his own Minimise, Costello then delivered one of the greatest ambient albums 2001s Together Is The New Alone for Mille Plateaux. In 2004, he changed course again and put out the Colorseries records, which joined the dots between old school bleep bass/rave and new school techno abandon. Never one to repeat himself, Donnacha set up a new label, Look Long, this year, which has seen his grooves slow somewhat and his focus shift towards melodies again. Expect to hear old, new and unreleased material at Test tonight. Tonight, Test, The Underground, Kennedys, Westland Row D2, 11pm, 10. Its been quite a year for John Daly (pictured). Although the Cork-based DJ has been making music for many years and set up the Feel Music label in 2006 as an outlet to release his material, 2009 has seen his profile mushroom. So far this year, he has released his distinctively deep, disco- influenced take on house music for labels like IRR, Mule and Drumpoet Community, while Francois Ks Wave imprint put out his acclaimed Sea & Sky album. A regular fixture on the international circuit with appearances at Europes most respected clubs, Daly delivers his lush dance floor sound to the Nightflight fateful this weekend. Tonight, Nightflight, The Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar D2, 11pm, 10. While it has a topical name, the Yes Festival has little to do with persuading voters to ratify the Lisbon Treaty. Instead, organisers Acii Disco are hoping that this one- day event will provide a soundtrack that spans everything from indie to techno and showcases some of the capitals best DJ talent. Pogos Barry Redsetta (who has supported and often outshone visiting techno guests), Lunar Disko resident Barry Donovan and Mantrap label head Sunil Sharpe are the highlights from a long list of Irish DJs. The festival takes place over three stages and runs all day, with an after party scheduled at the Underground.
