The striker slipped the ball past keep- er Marcus Hahnemann on 66 minutes to send the holders into round four des- pite a nervy performance. Fabios red card half an hour in for hauling down Michael Kightly when the Wolves winger was through on goal inspired the visitors for a while before United began to create chances of their own after the break. Sir Alex Ferguson had named an en- tirely different United side from the one which won the Manchester derby on Sunday with Michael Owen handed only his second start for the club. And was a near full-strength Wolves who looked anxious early on as they were forced on to the back foot. But United lacked penetration up front and the highlight of the first half was the duel on the right flank between Nani and full-back George Elokobi. Under pressure from the Camerooni- an, Nani struggled with his crossing as Elokobi kept him in check. After Fabio was dismissed by referee Peter Walton, former United youngster David Jones was denied from the free- kick by Tomasz Kuszczaks save. But chances were few and far bet- ween. Wolves best opening saw Chris- tophe Berra wastefully head over but they were unable to make the most of their extra man. United came back into it and led on 66 minutes. The ball had deflected off Hahnemann on to a post just before Welbecks strike and Darron Gibson also went close. The breakthrough eventually came when Welbeck ex- changed passes with Owen and beat the onrushing Hahnemann to score. Substitute Kevin Doyle went close for Wolves but United felt comfort- able enough to give 17-year-old Josh King a debut. The Toffees raced into a three- goal lead by half-time as Yakubu clipped a fine shot over Matt Duke on ten minutes for his first goal since November. The Tigers were better after the break but Leon Osman turned the screw, netting Evertons fourth. Carlo Ancelottis side did just enough against their Championship opponents to reach round four of the competition as Kalou struck seven minutes into the second half. In a Chelsea side containing ten changes, Joe Cole was named captain in his first game since January. The midfielder had been sidelined with a knee injury, as had Paulo Ferreira, while Yuri Zhirkov made his first competitive appearance since his summer move from CSKA Moscow. Chelseas goal came in the 52nd minute after 27-year-old Cole slipped it through to Kalou, who cut inside Mikele Leigertwood and applied crisp finish which went in off the post. Crouch volleyed Spurs into a 14th- minute lead at Deepdale and Jermain Defoe doubled the advantage eight minutes before half- time after nimble footwork on the edge of the area. Aaron Lennon then set up Crouch for his second goal in the 77th minute. Chris Brown pulled one back for Preston before substitute Robbie Keane bagged Spurs fourth and Crouch completed his hat-trick. Preston 1 tottenham 5 Gift of the Gab gives Villa victory GABRIEL Agbonlahor continued his hot scoring streak to fire Aston Villa into the fourth round of the Carling Cup. The striker took just three minutes to find the target for the fourth game in a row as he tucked away a cross from John Carew. James Milner and Carew could both have extended the lead but the Championship side had chances to draw level and Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan was forced into a fine save to deny Gavin Rae. Milner could have wrapped it up from the spot but missed a 57th minute penalty. aston villa 1 cardiff 0 MANCHESTER City captain Kolo Toure steered the club into the fourth round of the Carling Cup by scoring the winner in extra-time against Fulham at Eastlands. Toure got on the end of a corner from substitute Martin Petrov to head home in the 111th minute. It was his first goal since his arrival this summer from Arsenal and a welcome one at that after Gareth Barry had cancelled the opener from Fulhams Zoltan Gera. man city 2 fulham 1 (aet, 1-1 after 90 minutes) Wolves lick their wounds Welbeck wins it for ten-man United Having a crack: Michael Owen fires in a shot for United Picture: PA
