Workshops, tours, shows and gigs await, plus a few surprises Interview by Lucy White This is an opportunity for Dubliners to discover and participate in the citys cultural life, free from financial constraints or time pressures This years Culture Night is the biggest yet. Whats new to this years programme? There are 124 cultural venues involved in Dublin Culture Night this year, ranging from galleries, museums and theatres to artist studios, churches and parks, of which nearly 30 will be new. Whitefriar Street Church will be giving guided tours of the priory where Carmelite Friars have lived and worked since 1284; Airfield in Dundrum is organising live music and free etching demonstrations; Guinness Storehouse will throw open its doors for free for the first time, and Dublin childrens museum Imaginosity is inviting families to come and explore its interactive exhibits and workshops. Anything back by popular demand? The Original Print Gallery in Temple Bar always attracts huge amounts of people for its workshops and demonstrations, as does childrens cultural centre The Ark. Workshops are always very popular as they give people a chance to participate in the action and learn something new. Tours of artists studios are also always extremely popular, as these provide a rare behind-the-scenes experience of the art-making process. Culture Night will run until midnight. Will public transport be facilitating this? Dublin Bus are once again on board providing free transport on three key routes around the city. The buses will run every 20minutes from 6pm until 10.30pm, when the last buses will leave the city centre to be at the outermost venues for pick up at 11pm. The Luas and Dart will operate as normal, the former offering 50 free tickets for unlimited travel on both the Red and Green Luas lines tomorrow night. These tickets will be available on a first-come first-served basis and are available for collection from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre now. citys cultural life, free from financial constraints or time pressures. As there are similar events held around Europe, tourists recognise Culture Night as a fantastic opportunity to experience the buzz and excitement of the city and all that it has to offer. Which of the events are you personally most excited about? The Contemporary Music Centre will present a programme of indoor and outdoor sound installations and gigs featuring an interactive iPhone/iPod touch installation and Im curious to see that in action. The National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, will be providing the opportunity for people to visit The Dead Zoo At Large exhibition where, for one night only, Dublin Zoo will be on hand with live animals! I also plan on visiting the GAA Museum at Croke Park where theyll be opening their doors for a special night of floodlit tours of the stadium, which I imagine will be an inspiring experience. www.culturenight.ie Autumn is a great time for culture in Dublin, what with the Fringe, Bulmers Comedy, Theatre Festival and Culture Night. How has the recession impacted supply and demand? Last year, 100,000 people attended 105 venues, with the latest opening until 11pm. This year, the number of cultural venues participating has increased, with over a quarter of those remaining open until midnight, and were expecting audience numbers to exceed 100,000. So supply and demand of creativity has definitely increased. Since its inception, the project has been keen to get Dubliners involved and to encourage them to reconnect with their own city. Has the ratio of natives-to-tourists changed over the years? Previously, the ratio of natives to tourists had been about 3:1 and this has remained steady over the years.
