How gang bunkered ebay with fake golf clubs scamby miLES ERwinA GANG of fraudsters off-loaded millions of pounds worth of fake golf clubs on to unsuspecting eBay cus- tomers, a court heard yesterday. Gary Bellchambers masterminded the plot, said to be the biggest coun- terfeiting operation yet uncovered on the website. Prosecutors described it as of a truly global nature and on a scale that never been seen before. Nearly every major golf brand has been affected by the sales of counter- feit goods through eBay accounts, said Adam Davies. Bellchambers, 45, who has admit- ted fraud and conspiracy, repeatedly travelled to China to source the clubs, Londons Snaresbrook Crown Court heard. His six co-defendants, who deny playing a crucial role in the plot, are said to have managed ac- counts or acted as distributors. Despite the sophistication of the scheme, which ran for four years until March 30 last year, it was foiled when a dissatisfied customer called trading standards over her sub-standard Acushnet golf clubs. She and her husband had asked for a refund. But jurors were told because Bellchambers was abroad, the cus- tomers her letters went unanswered a rarity in this case because as you can imagine it would be in the (con- spirators) interests to make sure there were no complaints, said Mr Davies. Havering Council in east London investigated and raided a number of addresses during Operation Augusta. Among them was Bellchambers home in Rainham, Essex, England. Mr Davies said a large quantity of clubs were seized. All were fake, apart from those that belonged to him. All six people with UK addresses deny conspiracy. The trial continues. Drug-dose error killed patient A MOTHER of five died after a doctor mistakenly prescribed a lethal dose of a chemotherapy drug, an inquest has heard. Anna McKenna was given four times the recommended amount of Idarubicin to treat her bone marrow cancer. The overdose destroyed almost all of the 56-year-olds white blood cells, leaving her immune system powerless against disease. Her kidneys failed and she died three weeks after taking the drug. Her doctor admitted prescribing 60mg of the drug per day instead of 15mg. I am very sorry, said Dr Jacqueline James of Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, England. mcKenna: Died index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
