HORSE RACING Goodwood, Kempton, Perth, Redcar, Downpatrick fixtures results Touch Ngog for Reds against spirited Leeds liverpool survived an uncomfortable night at elland road thanks to David Ngogs 66th-minute strike. The 20-year-old French strikers fifth goal for the reds was enough to see off their spirited league one opponents and send rafael Benitezs side into the fourth round of the competition. But leeds, hosting liver- pool for the first time since 2004, were no pushovers. roared on by their biggest home crowd since their pre- mier league relegation five years ago, they twice went close through Jermaine Beckford and also had a goal disallowed in the first half for offside. But liverpool, who almost went ahead late in the first half when Shane Higgs made a superb point-blank save from an Albert riera header, survived. And they scored the deci- sive goal 24 minutes from time when Ngog latched on to Javier Mascheranos mis- hit shot in the penalty area and turned to produce a fine finish. Mascherano, though, was lucky to be on the pitch after he escaped censure for an elbow on Beckford. it must have been really close, leeds boss Simon Grayson said of his sides disallowed goal. its one of those decisions that can go for you sometimes or against you. obviously, its gone against us tonight and it was a big turning point in the game. i thought we were ex- cellent and we created really good chances but sometimes you dont get them breaks. Jeff Kenna resigned from the position last week after the 2-0 home defeat by First Division Waterford United in the FAi Ford Cup quarter- finals and Mahon, who was at the Brandywell as Saints drew 1-1 with Derry City in the Setanta Cup, takes over today for the rest of the season. Mahon, who was assistant to pat Dolan at the club in 1998, must steer the inchicore club away from the premier Division relegation zone and will be assisted by former Dundalk boss John Gill. Mahon said: its just until the end of the season, because it suits me ideally and it suits them, because ive been out of the game for almost a year and ive become accustomed to a very good lifestyle. pats chief executive richard Sadlier said he was delighted Mahon has come on board, adding: Hopefully he can make an immediate impact. pats came from behind last night in front of their new boss to salvage a point in their Setanta Cup opener. pats could have little complaint in going in a goal down at the break after a clumsy challenge by John lester resulted in him tripping winger liam Kearney. Thomas Stewart fired home the penalty, but midfielder lester made amends after the break, with a dipping 35-yard equaliser. derry C 1 st pats 1 Boltons Cahill extra special DefenDer Gary Cahill was the unlikely hero for Bolton as he produced a stunning strike in extra time to help beat West Ham 3-1 in their Carling Cup third-round tie at the reebok Stadium. The centre-back drilled home from 25 yards six minutes into the additional period to turn things around for the home side, with Johan elmander sliding in a third late on. Wanderers captain Kevin Davies had struck with a header just before the end of 90 minutes to cancel out Herita Ilungas first goal for West Ham on the hour. BeNNi McCArTHYS fortuitous free- kick was the difference as premier league Blackburn progressed to the fourth round at the City Ground. The South Africa strikers curling 37th-minute effort beat everyone, including keeper paul Smith, and proved enough for rovers. Nottingham Forest should have equalised when Steven reid back from a long absence through injury handled late on. However, rovers keeper Jason Brown superbly dived to his left to push away Dexter Blackstocks penalty and preserve Blackburns slender lead. JOrDAn HenDerSOn and fraizer Campbell scored their first goals for Sunderland as they sent Premier League rivals Birmingham crashing out of the Carling Cup. Young midfielder Henderson put the Black Cats ahead after just four minutes at the Stadium of Light, steering his shot past Maik Taylor. Campbell converted Andy reids cross 19 minutes later to seal the win. They might have won even more comfortably had Maik Taylor not denied Kenwyne Jones with his legs, or had defender John Mensahs 57th-minute strike not been chalked off for a foul. And despite the Championship leaders mounting a brave assault while a man down the Baggies eventually crashed to two second-half sucker-punch goals. Wengers young side demolished Sheffield United 6-0 at this stage of last seasons competition. And the Arsenal boss kept true to form by effectively fielding his youth team on home turf with a side featuring eight teenagers. Wenger at least used the experienced Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos to bolster his defence. Yet the hosts were tested early on when rookie goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was forced to deny robert Koren and Simon Cox in a lively first half. But they made sure of their numerical advantage after the break when 18-year-old debutant Sanchez Watt broke the deadlock on 68 minutes. And when Mark randalls chip came back off the bar, Carlos Vela sealed victory.
