22 METROSPORT Wednesday, September 23, 2009 D Bold strategy: McCarthy McCarthy has plan to attack at Old Trafford WOLVES manager Mick McCarthy has vowed to be bold when his side face Manchester United in the Carling Cup tonight. McCarthy believes going to Old Trafford to try and frustrate United would be a mistake and is not prepared for his team to sit back and defend for 90 minutes. The former Republic of Ireland boss said: We will play 4-4-2 against them and have a game with them. I dont know what team Sir Alex Ferguson will play but we will play whoever he turns out. But we are not going there to sit back and have them attack us for 90 minutes. That would be a recipe for disaster so we will be going up there and trying to make sure that we are on the front foot for the game. I have never beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford in anything but we want to try to win the game. While McCarthy is making changes to the side that beat Fulham 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday he will hand starts to strikers Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Stefan Maierhofer and winger Michael Kightly he sees the cup tie as a good chance to experience Old Trafford before the more important trip there in the league later in the season. United are expecting a crowd of 60,000 and McCarthy is keen to ensure his players do not get fazed by one of the most famous stadiums in the world. He added: It is a chance to go to Old Trafford, against one of the better bigger teams to go and play a game and see what it is all about and learn without having to go up there when there are points at stake. Former world No.1 Justine Henin is to make a comeback, less than two years after retiring from tennis. I think it is a good choice, a big decision in my life, the 27-year- old Belgian said yesterday. The past 15 months I have been able to recharge my physical batteries, mental batteries [and] emotional batteries. The aim is to return [to the tour] in January in Australia. In any case it will be during the 2010 season. The seven-times grand slam winner said she was inspired by the spectacular comeback of compatriot Kim Clijsters, who won the US open this month after only a few weeks back on the professional circuit. returning at that level so fast is something I respect enormously, said Henin. Henin, who retired in may 2008 aged 25 saying she no longer had any passion for tennis, will play exhibition tournaments in Dubai and Belgium in November and December. Edinburgh are the only team to have won all three of their opening fixtures thanks to their impressive comeback victory against Ulster at Ravenhill last week, their ninth league win in a row dating back to last season. Leinster have recovered from losing their opening game with victories over the Welsh pair of Dragons and Ospreys, but Gaffney knows Saturdays clash will offer the clearest indication yet of their early-season form. Edinburgh have always been a good side and perhaps theyre only getting the recogni- tion they deserve now after their excellent start to the season, Gaffney said. With each game you can see how theyre progressing, so that makes this weekends game an exciting one to be a part of and one I know our players are looking forward to. We have won two out of our first three games this year and we are improving. Were pretty happy with where we are, but we also know that theres room for improvement. Edinburgh have a hugely competitive pack and they have exciting backs who like to run and are adept at spinning the ball out wide and playing with a lot of attacking flair. At this moment in time we know that were not in top form, but we are improving. Saturdays game will be another massive challenge for us and one that were looking forward to. leinster squad v edinburgh: Leo Cullen (captain), John Fogarty, Cian Healy, Jamie Heaslip, Nathan Hines, Bernard Jackman, Shane Jennings, Ronan McCormack, Kevin McLaughlin, Sean OBrien, Mike Ross, Dominic Ryan, Devin Toner, Stan Wright, Shaun Berne, Gordon DArcy, Girvan Dempsey, Luke Fitzgerald, Shane Horgan, Chris Keane, Rob Kearney, Simon Keogh, Fergus McFadden, Isa Nacewa, Eoin Reddan, Jonathan Sexton boxing BERnARD DUnnES world title challenger Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym says he wants to shed the label Thailands Manny Pacquiao and become a household name in his own right with victory over the Dubliner at the O2 Arena on Saturday night, writes Gareth Makim. The number one contender to Dunnes WBA super bantamweight belt is bullish about his chances and has already predicted a knockout win inside seven rounds. I am confident my power will make the difference in this fight, said Poonsawat. Dunne has fast hands and he is also very accurate, but his chin is suspect and I am looking to make the most of that. With 38 wins in 39 fights, Poonsawat is clearly a force to be reckoned with and he says he wants to do for boxing in Thailand what pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has done for the Philippines. Pacquiao is the best boxer in the sport at the moment and he has made his homeland famous, said Poonsawat. I want to give Thailand a big name too and make fans realise that Asia doesnt just have Pacquiao. I dont want to be known as Thailands Manny Pacquiao. I want to be known as Poonsawat of Thailand. The fight with Dunne will be widely publicised so the world will know that Thailand produces good boxers. My dream is to make Thailand number one again. Harrington (pictured), a triple major champion, is seeking his first win this year on the PGA or european tours but has produced good form in his last five appearances on the US circuit, ending all five in the top ten. Im happy to be here and could turn around a year this week, the 38-year-old said ahead of the seasons fourth and final FedexCup playoff event. The last few weeks have been good. Ive been pushing for a win and this would be a big week to get that win. (I would) turn what was less than an average year... into a great year. Victory at east Lake on Sunday would earn Harrington a cheque for $1.35million (912,000) and the chance of a $10million (6.76m) bonus as the overall FedexCup champion.
