The third series sees her visit European cities meeting the Irish diaspora and locals whove become fluent in Irish. Tonights show kicks off in Copenhagen Interview by Adam Hyland One guy came to Ireland and saw the road signs in two languages and thought, Hmm... Whats this language? So he went home and started learning it out of books So whats Thar Sile about? We travel all over Europe and find out about Irish culture and connections, told to us by natives of those cities who have learned Irish. Why is there is such an interest in Irish abroad? Many people visit here without realising we have our own language, and they like it, and realise how its tied to our history. They learn it without any baggage as opposed to how many of us learn it in school. They come at it from a different angle, and theres something we can learn from that: why is it that foreigners can learn Irish fluently and yet so many Irish people come out of school with a negative attitude towards it? A lot of people say that the way they learned Irish in school put them off, and its such a shame. When I find the solution Ill let you know. Where was your favourite place? Lisbon and Copenhagen. Copenhagen is a really vibrant, cool city with friendly people. We found four people in that programme who are Danish and had learned Irish fluently. Caitrona Yeats, great-granddaughter of WB Yeats, lives there and works as a harpist for the Danish National Orchestra. Theres a distinct lift in energy levels as soon as you get there. Lisbon is a great city too. It has a very earthy quality. The people are friendly, it has a lovely setting an old-fashioned feel in a modern city. You must have come across the occasional Irish pub. Whats the most common name for them? Theres a Molly Malone in every city. I know its a clich, but theres a lot of craic to be had in Irish pubs, if you pick the right one. Somewhere that has Irish people but also locals and foreigners you can mix it up. But Irish pubs are a magnet for craic, you cant deny it. Its one of our strongest exports. ONeill clan in Portugal. If I could bring him to Irish schools to teach history it would be phenomenal. His knowledge and interest in Irish history, culture and heritage is astounding. Stephen Roche too. I didnt know he owned a hotel in Nice. I got to go on a cycle along the Promenade des Anglais with him. That was a highlight beyond a highlight. Whats the main reason for someone learning Irish abroad? You find people learning it because they love the music of U2, or trad music. One guy came to Ireland and saw the road signs in two languages and thought, Hmm, whats this language? So he went home and started learning it out of books and came back and improved it. There are many reasons, but the key ones are music and the people. We are our own best export. Thar Sile starts tonight on TG4 at 7.30pm and runs weekly until mid-November. Where in the world does Guinness taste as good as it does at home? Frankfurt. The Germans know how to do beer. Whats the most defining characteristic of the Irish diaspora abroad? A lot of people use the clich that we drink a lot. At first you try to defend it, but when you think about it, well, relatively speaking we do. On a positive note, Ireland has a gorgeous landscape, but ultimately the friendliness of the people sells it. Thats what travels the best. People want to come back to meet the people and have the craic. If we lose that, we will lose a lot. You get to meet some very interesting characters who was your favourite?
