The Dubliner won the award for outstanding lead actor in a mini-series or movie, for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the acclaimed HBO biopic Into The Storm. Accepting the award at the LA ceremony, 54-year-old Gleeson said: Now theres a turn-up for the books. He went on to thank leading crew members, including producer Frank Doelger, as he remembered his mother in his acceptance speech. In particular, Frank Doelger for allowing my mam and dad to see a first cut of this, of Into The Storm, before my mam died. It meant a huge amount to me and Id like to thank him for that, Gleeson said. Gleeson beat competition from a shortlist which included Sir Ian McKellen, Kenneth Branagh and Kiefer Sutherland. Director Dearbhla Walsh followed her success with an Emmy for directing the hit BBC adapta- tion of Charles Dickens Little Dorrit, which also won best script and best mini-series. Drama series Mad Men and sit-com 30 Rock led a pack of Emmy winners who successfully defended their titles, while Australian Toni Collette of United States Of Tara was hon- oured as best lead actress in a comedy series for her role as a mother with multiple per- sonalities. Wow, this is insanely confronting, said the Little Miss Sunshine star. We want to thank our friends at NBC for keeping us on the air... even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show, said 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey, refer- ring to Jay Lenos new prime-time comedy show, as she picked up the shows award.
