D Monday, September 21, 2009 METRO Boxer will be laid to rest today MOURNERS gathered in Navan last night to pay their respects to Olympic boxer Darren Sutherland, who will be laid to rest today. Darrens parents, Tony and Linda, and his sisters Nicole and Shaneika attended the short service in St Marys Church, as did Olympic athlete Eamonn Coughlan and FAI chief John Delaney. A small number of people lined the street as the coffin was brought from the funeral home to the church. Parish priest Fr Declan Hurley said no words could express the tragic loss felt by Darrens devastated family. We sympathise with you on such a terrible loss, he said. A framed photo of a beaming Dar- ren with his bronze Olympic medal and a painting of him with his nick- name The Dazzler written on top rested by the side of the altar. Meanwhile, it has emerged that the 27-year-olds manager, Frank Maloney, and his trainer, Brian Law- rence, have been banned from attend- ing the funeral. Speaking to a Sunday newspaper, his father, Tony, said that the two men are not welcome at the funeral. Rejecting suggestions that his son was bi-polar, Mr Sutherland said that Darren was unhappy in England and he is hoping and praying that Darrens diary, which is currently with the police, will reveal why he took his own life. The boxer was found dead at his home by Mr Maloney last Monday.
