SDLP leader to call it a day SDLP leader Mark Durkan has announced his intention to step down as party leader after the next Northern Assembly elections. The move is not unexpected, given that the 49-year-old has already stated he would not continue past his 50th birthday. He said he would like to see a new leader in place well ahead of the next Assembly elections, which are expected in 2011. TAOISEACH Brian Cowen has indicated that the report of the Commission on Taxation would be implemented in the long rather than short-term. Commenting on claims that many of the reports recommendations would be shelved, Mr Cowen said there was a long-term focus on reforming the tax system, which the Government would tackle over the coming years. Tax not top priority 4 charged over 2m heroin FOUR men appeared in court charged in connection with the seizure of 2million worth of heroin in Robertstown, Co Kildare. The four, aged from 24 to 46 and from Finglas, Clondalkin and Co Kildare, appeared at a special sitting of Naas District Court. Three are charged with possession and intent to supply the drug, while one man is charged with allowing premises to be used contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act. Two hundred people took part in the urban adventure series on Saturday Champs of Chase play ball to winBy joanne ahernIT WAS a day of twos for the second annual Dublin City Chase. The winning pair from team Sugarloaf completed the challenge on Saturday in 2hrs and 22mins. This is the first time that 25-year-olds Ciaran Pollard and Lorcan Walsh have taken the challenge. The number of competitors taking part in this years Chase was 200 100 teams of two. The flatmates decided to take part for fun after they got an e-mail about the Chase. The part-scavenger hunt, part-adventure race calls on competitors to complete a series of fun challenges scattered all over the city in as quick a time as possible us- ing only public transport. Lorcan said the duos biggest challenge was the giant hamster ball, where com- petitors got into the inflatable ball at Grand Canal Dock, move out to a certain point in the water and come back again. The pair are now off toArgentina in De- cember to take on the global City Chase competitors. Were shocked that we won so we re- ally havent thought of any strategies [for Argentina] yet, Lorcan said, adding that they are hoping Ciarans knowledge of Spanish will give them an edge.
