22 METROSPORT Monday, September 21, 2009 D Vatanen calls for Renault to escape ban RENAULT have been told they should not be thrown out of Formula One because of their involvement in Crashgate by the official who could be motor racings next president. FIA chiefs, including F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone (pictured), meet in Paris today to decide Renaults fate. But Ari Vatanen, battling to succeed Max Mosley as the the governing bodys next leader, feels they deserve leniency after team principal Flavio Briatore and chief engineer Pat Symonds resigned last week. Renault decided not to contest allegations former driver Nelson Piquet Jnr had been ordered to deliberately crash at the Singapore Grand Prix last year to allow team-mate Fernando Alonso to win the race. And former world rally champion Vatanen believes punishing Renault by expulsion would be disproportionate, saying: Renault has got more or less their punishment in terms of image and having lost their top brass, and we have to see the bigger context here. Dont just focus on this incident and look at what we can do about FIA and about the sport. formula one Gaa all-ireland football final Cork wilt before Old masters Kerry rise to the occasion by paul keane REFLECTING their Championship campaign as a whole, Kerry came from behind at Croke Park with a character-laden display to claim their 36th All-Ireland title yesterday. Just three months ago, after a com- prehensive Munster final replay de- feat by Cork, we questioned if this Kerry team was shot, over the hill. But if their performance against Dublin did not answer that question then this display certainly did. Trailing 0-1 to 1-3 after 11 minutes following a whirlwind start by a Cork team tipped to run the legs off Kerry, the Kingdom dug deep. And how. They stayed cool and calm and col- lected enough points to take the lead by two at the interval, doubling that margin by the final whistle as Corks forwards misfired badly after the break, sending chance after chance awry with nine second-half wides. Kerrys performance mirrored their sensational season. Nobody gave them much of a hope of a prolonged Championship cam- paign after the Cork defeat. But boss Jack OConnor effectively used the qualifier games against Longford, Sligo and Antrim to put to- gether a new team. Compare the side that lined out yes- terday to the one that lost to Cork in Munster and you will see a complete- ly different central spine. So OConnor must take huge praise for how he has transformed Kerrys fortunes in his second stint in charge. kerry 0-16 cork 1-9 Heat of battle: kerrys declan oSullivan (top) struggles past kieran oConnor. things had looked rosy for Cork early on when Colm oneill (below right) netted, but it was kingdom duo paul Galvin and boss Jack oConnor who lifted Sam Maguire when it was all over results CyClinG tour of Spain (Rivas - Madrid, 110.2km) leading final positions after Stage 21: 1 Andre Greipel (Ger) Columbia- HTC 3hrs 11mins 55secs, 2 Daniele Bennati (Ita) Liquigas, 3 Borut Bozic (Slo) Vacansoleil, 4 Leonardo Duque (Col) Cofidis, 5 Sebastien Hinault (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale all same time. Armagh seize minor crown ARMAGh left it late at Croke Park with the last three points of the game to secure their first All-Ireland minor title in 60 years. The sides were level six times in a dour affair, the last of which was at 0-7 apiece with just three minutes remaining. But while Armagh hit eight wides in the second half and threatened to throw it away they finally came good. Substitute Thomas McAlinden put them ahead with a 57th-minute point before Peter Carragher and Robbie Tasker hit injury-time scores. It is Mayos second final loss on the trot and their fifth decider defeat in a decade. armaGh 0-10 mayo 0-7 Pictures:Sportsifle today SoCCer league of ireland first division Sporting Fingal v Wexford Yths. 7.45 HorSe raCinG Hamilton, Kempton, Leicester, Ballinrobe tenniS (all week) atp open de Moselle (Metz, France) atp bCr open romania (Bucharest) Wta Hansol korea open (Seoul) Wta tashkent open (Uzbekistan) toMorroW SoCCer (7.45pm unless stated) Carling Cup third round Arsenal v West Brom........................
