It was the Irish government who campaigned in 2007 for a clause on climate change in the Lisbon Treaty, which states that the EU will work to promote international co-ordinated action on this issue. The Treaty will bring in a Charter of Fundamental Rights one of these rights is a right to a high level of environmental protection (Article 37), and integration of the environment into all EU policies. Lisbon will allow the EU to work on energy policy, dealing with energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy. The EU can help create green jobs in renewable energy in Ireland, which keeps full freedom on the use and exploitation of its natural resources. More than any other issue, the environment needs cooperation across borders and continents. The EU has proven itself as the global leader on climate change and the Lisbon Treaty will be instrumental in it developing its ability to do so. Anna Hickey, by e-mail Im saddened to see that Metro has jumped on the bandwagon of bombarding us with how brilliant the EU has been to Ireland. This is a tactic used by the Yes side to fool voters into thinking we are voting either to stay in the EU by voting Yes or by voting No to leave it. This is not the case! We are voting on whether to accept a treaty or not. We will be an integral part of the EU regardless of our decision on October 2. If we are such a democratic EU why are we voting on the exact same Treaty that we rejected last year? Every single word and comma of it is the same. This Government is just not competent. Karine, by e-mail Poor little rich kids: I cant believe that some people think having kids should be the sole prerogative of the rich. As a tax payer Id much rather see my hard- earned tax euros going to help parents support their families than going on renting a 1,400-a-day limo to chauffeur ODonoghue around Cheltenham. Jim, by e-mail Nama Monopoly: I would just like to say thanks to Metro for the Monopoly City 3D game I won last week in your super paper. I know myself and the family will have hours of fun playing the game. We can even turn it into our own Nama Monopoly game. Chris, by e-mail Brothers Ryan: One-F really hit the nail on the head in his description of both Gerry Ryan and Ryan Tubridy. Has anyone noticed the striking similarity in their physical appearances... Could be brothers! Susanna, by e-mail In Brief The recent article about the abandoned puppies stated that the Humane Society is overrun with animals. Maybe one reason is because of their ridiculous adoption policy. My husband has always loved dogs, so for Christmas 2008 I contacted the society to arrange to visit but was told that because we both worked and there wouldnt be anyone home 24 hours a day that we could not adopt any animal from them! Our schedules overlap, so there is only a period of 5-6 hours a day, four or less days a week that the dog would be alone less than 24 hours out of a 168 hour week! In the end we got our puppy from a breeder, and two years later he is a big, well-grown and well-loved behemoth who spends these few hours asleep in the grass or playing with his toys in our back garden. It is impossible to find anyone who can stay home with a pet for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. How many homeless cats, dogs and other animals are being put down every day, because the people who would love to adopt them, cant. Germanic Lil Jonny Bass, maybe you should start shaving your armpits for the sake of your brothers and you could help us all :) Maybe if you start shaving you will find finally a hot sis! Eu-sisters Dan the highly regarded Wall Street Journal is owned by Rupert Murdoch who is a notorious eurosceptic. Its view on Lisbon is likely to be biased. Ali The EU loves watery beanz Vote No! Mick So Fs wastes hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money on lavish expenses and the opposition demand that heads roll.
