The Luas driver and three passen- gers were badly hurt after being trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free by emergency rescue teams. A relative of one injured woman was involved in the rescue operation providing assistance to fire crews. An Irish woman said to be in her late teens was last night in a critical condition with head injuries in Beau- mont Hospital. Meanwhile, the Luas driver was said to be in a serious condition. It was serious enough as there were serious injuries and people were trapped, a Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman said. The accident happened at the corner of Abbey Street and OConnell Street just before 3pm and involved the No.16 bus to Santry and the Red Line Luas from Tallaght. The tram derailed on impact and ploughed into the side of the bus, pin- ning terrified passengers against bro- ken glass and twisted seats. It is understood the majority of those hurt suffered minor injuries, with many described as walking wounded. Others suffered fractured ribs, bruis- ing and cuts to the face and head. Three fire engines, four ambulances and a paramedic team were among the emergency services that attended the scene as hundreds of onlookers gathered to observe. Twenty-one people were taken to the Mater Hospital, although one was later transferred to Beaumont Hospi- tal, where three injured passengers had already been taken. Meanwhile, two others were taken to St Jamess Hospital. A Mater official later appealed to the public not to attend the hospital as its A&E department dealt with the various casualties. A number of investigations have been launched into the incident and it is expected investigators will look at whether a systems failure caused the collision, or if the lights at the busy junction were jumped. The accident sparked traffic chaos in the capital as rush-hour motorists tried to make their way home. Bus collision causes panic on OConnell Street It sounded like a bomb going off: See Page 5
