D Wednesday, September 16, 2009 METRO Izz it really the finish? Comedian Eddie takes off his stage heels to do 43 marathons in 51 days Charity on fire: Izzard, inspired by the Chariots Of Fire theme, ends his run for Sport Relief in Londons Trafalgar Square Picture: Rex HE IS used to being a stand-up, but right now Eddie Izzard is probably enjoying a lie-down. The transvestite comedian ended his charity run of 43 marathons in 51 days yesterday. He sprinted into Trafalgar Square in the rain to finish the last leg of the journey in aid of Sport Relief. Arriving just after 4.30pm, he was ex- hausted but also disappointed not to finish his final run in under five hours. He missed his target by just 30 sec- onds but still set a personal best. I feel dead, said the 47-year-old, who set off from London on July 27. I dont know what I was doing at the end. The worst part was the last three min- utes sprinting down The Mall. And in a Rocky-esque moment, he climbed the National Gallerys steps, lifted his hands in the air, and said: I feel exhausted. The mammoth task across the UK was not without pain. Although comfortable on stage in high heels, the switch to trainers did not spare him the effects of the road. The small toes have lost their nails and they look like alien monsters but theyll grow back, he said. Asked how his achievement ranked, the double Emmy award-winning comedian added: Its got to be right up there. This wasnt supposed to be on my list of things to do. I dont think it is that amazing, anyone can do it. He insisted he was inspired by a Sport Relief ice cream van that followed him during the 1,770km (1,100 miles). It plays the Chariots Of Fire theme in clinky twinkly music, which is a strange sound but I like it. he said. Now, Im going to have a party somewhere dry and then go to sleep for a week.
