The former England midfielder was on hand to head home Nanis parried shot in the 77th minute to rescue a frustrating night for Sir Alex Fergusons team. The goal came after Wayne Rooney, who reacted to his 64th- minute substitution by stalking off the pitch, appeared to exchange angry words with a section of home fans before throwing his boots to the dug-out floor. The Turkish champions gave United a tough examination in a lively atmosphere in Istanbul and further tough trips await the Premier League champions in this group to German champions Wolfsburg and CSKA Moscow. But last night they showed the resolve to scrape the win which gets their attempt to reach a third successive Champions League final off to the best possible start. In the first half Nemanja Vidic, Rooney and Nani had chances. But the hosts came closest to scoring through Serdar Ozkans deflected shot. After the break, Besiktas could have taken the lead through Marcio Nobre before Scholes had the final say after Hakan Arikan parried Nanis firm effort. Benitez said: Maybe it has been brought in too soon. in the Champions league we had two or three years to increase the numbers of homegrown players. the problem in england is the big gap between the academies and the first team; the reserve league is not filling this gap. it may now be difficult to maintain quality but we will continue to do our best. the number of players is not the point, the quality is the point. Benitez will put those concerns behind him for the visit of Champions league debutants Debrecen. the Reds boss, who has Javier Mascherano back after a pelvic injury, said: the Premier league is the priority for the fans. But i am greedy i want to win the Premier league and the Champions league. Benitez in no rush to fill up quota LEINSTER may still be without the services of British and Irish Lions quartet Brian ODriscoll, Luke Fitzgerald, Rob Kearney and Jamie Heaslip, but that has not prevented them from naming a 27-man squad containing 12 full internationals for this Fridays Magners League trip to the Ospreys. Girvan Dempsey returns to a panel that includes Gordon DArcy and last weeks debutants Eoin Reddan and Nathan Hines. Leinster defensive coach Kurt McQuilkin knows that, despite getting their campaign up and running by beating the Dragons at the RDS last week, the province will need to improve if they are to see off a strong Ospreys side that will be looking to bounce back after a surprise defeat by Ulster. McQuilkin said: It was good to get our first win of the campaign last weekend, but even in victory there were areas that we need to improve. Defensively we werent happy with our first-up tackling or our line speed. Our resets worked well but we have work to do this week. The Ospreys are outstanding, with speed, power and skill across their pack and backline. Mike Phillips is a key man for them. He likes to probe around the fringes and is another big presence while out wide they have serious pace which we will need to contend with. They will be disappointed with the Ulster defeat last time out, but they remain serious contenders for the title and we know we will need to raise our performance to get a result. leinster squad (v ospreys): S Berne, G DArcy, G Dempsey, S Horgan, C Keane, D Kearney, S Keogh, F McFadden, I Nacewa, P ODonohoe, E Reddan, J Sexton, L Cullen, J Fogarty, J Harris-Wright, C Healy, N Hines, B Jackman, S Jennings, S Keogh, R McCormack, K McLaughlin, S OBrien, M OKelly, M Ross, D Toner, S Wright captain Brian oDriscoll and paul oconnell were on hand yesterday to launch the new ireland rugby kit, made by puma. the ireland squad finished a two-day training camp yesterday ahead of autumn internationals against south Africa, Fiji and Australia in november when the kit will debut.
