His was a fascinating life he rose from poverty to acclaim in the Soviet Air Force before finally making his mark as the first to orbit the Earth, which makes his death in an air crash all the more tragic, and not without its mystery. Inquests by the military (twice), the government, and the KGB mean his demise will forever be a source of controversy. I always wanted to be a comedian since I was a kid I was a big fan of Eddie Murphy. My parents, being traditionally Iranian, wanted me to be a doctor, lawyer or an engineer. But part-way through studying law, I decided I wanted to be a professor so I went to get my PhD in political science at UCLA, where I started doing some plays again. So I dropped out of that... She said theres going to be a need for positive voices for Middle Easterners around the world and this was before 9/11. Shed do these speciality shows, like a black comedy night or a Latino night and wanted to do a Middle Eastern night. She found Ahmed Ahmed, I knew Aron Kader, so she put us all together. Anyone at that time who wasnt Latino or black ended up on our show we had Indians, you name it. She called us Arabian Knights, which was a bone of contention for Iranians: Look, were not Arab; were Persians. So in 2005, we changed our name to the Axis Of Evil Comedy Tour and did our own shows. Did you have to self-censor your material when it toured the Middle East? Every place we went, the promoters would say, Hey guys, you can talk about anything you want, but no religion and no politics. Or, Actually, just not local politics. That said, Ahmed and I went to Saudi for some shows and I thought itd be really conservative. A local guy was one of the openers, Im backstage, and all of a sudden I hear him cussing in the Thriller dance scene? No! Im at the party where the dance scene happens but they had me and a couple of people standing on the side watching. The producer said later, Hey, we shouldve had you guys dancing! and I was like, Hell yeah, you should have! You were in The Interpreter. Was Sean Penn a barrel of laughs? He was actually very funny. He told jokes in between, he was very nice one of the film icons of our era. Do you have any movies in the pipeline? I have a recurring part on a US sitcom called Better Ofted, and another in Rita Rocks. Im touring a lot but Ive also written a film called Jimmy Vestwood: The American Hero, and its kind of like the Persian Pink Panther. Its about a guy living in Westwood with his mother, who has always wanted to be like Steve McQueen. So he stumbles on this little mystery and saves the day.
