Sutherland, 27, who won a bronze medal for Ire- land at last summers Beijing Olympics, was dis- covered in his flat in Bromley, in Kent, England, by his manager, Frank Maloney. The Dubliner was unbeaten in four professional fights and destined to become world super-mid- dleweight champion. Maloney, who famously managed world heavy- weight champion Lennox Lewis, said in a state- ment: It is very sad and unexpected. At this sad time my thoughts are with Darrens family and I hope their privacy at this very diffi- cult time will be respected by the media. It is a tragedy for Ireland and the world of boxing. Sutherland, whose fights were televised live by Sky Sports, moved to England to box profession- ally after his amazing success in Beijing inAugust last year. His achievement made him a national hero. He made his professional debut in Dublin last De- cember, winning by a knockout, and scored three more wins inside the distance since then. Sutherland was trained in London by Brian Law- rence and his next fight was due on October 16.
