With comic asides and musings on everything from growing up in Ireland to social etiquette, the Higgins sisters serve up a whimsical and laid-back programme. This episode sees them prepare a meal for their old school friends, so alongside the food, expect generous helpings of Maeves witty outlook on one-upmanship and female flattery. Lost Land Of The Volcano BBC1, 9pm The BBC team continue their trip around the stunning landscape of New Guinea, and this week George McGavin enlists the help of a local tribe in order to film the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. The unfortunate Steve Backshall doesnt get to see such colour and light, as he clambers around an underground river cave buried deep under a mountain, but what he finds is just as interesting. No matter, the affable crooner of successful songs including For Once In Your Life and Mysterious Woman has a new album out later this year The Promise being its first single I dont think anyone has disappointed me because I havent really elevated anyone that high, but Id be gob-smacked about meeting Olivia Newton-John what theyre doing. Its like a physical Facebook. How do you find the experience of co-writing? Gary Barlow once said Its great to share the birth experience. And it is! Having said that, there has to be an underlying trust. When youre with somebody else you have to be open enough to give and take, and to throw your ideas out there and know youre not going to get laughed at. Whats your most diva-like request on tour? I drink loads of water. I did one show in Melbourne and it was 34C amazingly hot for a guy from Mayo. Everyone thought I was going to die sweating. I kept asking for water so they kept bringing up these tiny bottles that after each song Id throw into me and go again I sweated for Ireland. So thats probably my biggest diva request keep the water coming! Looking at your websites gallery youve met many dignitaries and celebrities. Who was a highlight? smacked about meeting is Olivia Newton-John. I know Cliff Richard through Daniel ODonnell, and Olivia Newton-John is one of Cliffs best friends. Cliff has said, You know, youd sound really good together in a duet. I remember thinking yeah, Id love that. And weve ended up e-mailing each other, believe it or not. But Ive never met her yet, and I think she would be the one who I would actually clam up on. Or run away from. If we did a duet, wed have to do it on the other side of the world or something. Have you ever been bitten by an animal or Dustin? Never by Dustin. Er, bird flu? But I was bitten by a dog once during panto. I was doing rehearsals and would go off for a walk with my script and I got bitten by this dog and had to go to hospital for a tetanus injection. Fortunately I wasnt in costume at the time. The Promise is available for download on iTunes from Friday. www.marcroberts.ie Interview by Lucy White What is the genesis of your new single The Promise? We all know the story of people arriving back from America into rural Ireland with their big BMW that they rented at the airport, to pretend theyre having an amazing life overseas. The Promise came out of that idea of a better life; that youll go to a place and everything will be rosy, and the promise being that you would get to come home, maybe die with your own people, revisit your old family. But sadly, for a lot of people, that didnt last, and in the current climate it could happen all over again the faceless Irish of America who havent the identity of either status. The idea of The Promise probably subconsciously came about because of meeting so many Irish performers in America and also people I went to school with, who saw my name on a poster and thought, Hey, I must go and see him! And then you find out John Denver one of my biggest idols. When I was a kid everybody told me that I sounded like him although it was never intentional as a kid, being told that you sounded like the Milky Bar Kid, because thats really what John Denver looked like at that time, was not something to be proud of. But once I started playing the guitar and really listening to his music, I totally identified with the mans values, of family and friends and nature. And then I got to meet him. His tour manager said: Marc Roberts meet John Denver, John Denver meet Marc Roberts.. I remember going: Howya! Then the next words that fell out of my mouth were: I sang your songs at weddings! Corny... Who has disappointed you? I dont think anyone has disappointed me because I havent really elevated anyone that high. But the one person I can say Id be honestly gob- 14 metrolife Tuesday, September 15, 2009
