METRO Monday, September 14, 2009 D nowall hairdressing 20%off By Brian hutton Ganleys back for low-key campaign MILLIONAIRE businessman Declan Ganley yesterday claimed his dramatic comeback to fight the Lisbon Treaty would be low-key compared with last years well- financed offensive. The controversial founder of Libertas, who had vowed not to spearhead another drive against the EU reform deal, said he was pro- voked into a return by the Yes side. Officially launching his campaign ahead of the October 2 referendum, Mr Ganley said he would start fundraising today. We will not be running a campaign like the last Lisbon campaign, he said. The re- sources that we have are minuscule in com- parison to the Yes side. Mr Ganley had declared he was bowing out of politics after failing to get elected to the European Parliament in June. But he said fallacies in the pro-Lisbon camp had driven him into fronting a second attempt to thwart the treaty. Labour quiz Church on No leaflet THE LABOUR Party has called on the Catholic hierarchy to clarify why anti-Lisbon leaflets are allowed inside the doors of churches. Cork East Labour TD Sean Sherlock said: I do not think it is right that when I go to mass on a Sunday, I discover leaflets from the Fatima Rosary Group advocating a blatant No to the Lisbon Treaty. I believe that I have a right to attend church without being bombarded with messages from either side of the debate. That leaflets are being distributed with religious symbols and iconography in their artwork, but with a political messages inside, is an abuse of the openness and accessibility of churches. He said the message of the leaflet, which claimed the EU Parliament in Strasbourg will be turned into a military headquarters, was blatant nonsense. ticket to ride: Former taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald joined ireland for Europe Volunteers as they campaigned for the Lisbon treaty at the Square Shopping Centre in tallaght Picture: Maxpix MENU THE Home Digest 4 Guilty Pleasures Celebrity gossip 6 World Digest 10 MetroLife Arts and entertainment 12-13 60 Second Interview Author Manchn Magan 14 TV 14-15 Puzzles & Letters 16-17 Classifieds 18-19 Sport 20-24 Help keep Dublin clean and tidy for everyone by taking your Metro with you and recycling it Elton adoption under fireSIR ELTON JOhNs plan to adopt a child from Ukraine could result in more youngsters being abandoned, a charity has claimed. EveryChild, an international childrens charity, said it was concerned by the singers announcement that he and partner David Furnish, 46, wanted to adopt a 14-month-old boy called Lev. The organisation said that, while it praised Sir Eltons help in raising awareness of the plight of children affected by hIV in Ukraine, it said the answer to the countrys deepening hIV and Aids crisis does not lie in international adoption, arguing that more children may be abandoned in childrens homes as a result of another high-profile celebrity adoption. If Sir Elton, 62, were successful he would follow in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who has three adopted children from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia, and Madonna, who adopted a girl from Malawi. row: Sir Elton with Lev Better deal for workers, says report A NEW report claims ratification of the Lisbon Treaty will enhance workers rights and strengthen their entitlement to collective bargaining including strike action. It also rejects claims the treaty will undermine employees pay and working conditions. Labour TD Joe Costello, co-author, said that for the very first time there is reference in European treaties to a commitment to collective bargaining. Now thats going to be law if the Lisbon Treaty is passed. But Sinn Fin President Gerry Adams claims a new Lisbon Treaty is needed to underpin workers rights. If you dont believe in workers rights, if you dont believe in public services, if you believe in Nama... then of course youll vote the other way. But if you believe in those as core principles then I believe people will vote No. toDay: another dry day with some cloud cover. Max: 16C toMorroW: Dry and settled with sunny spells.
