Television What To Watch Telly Tubridy: Ryans not looking over his shoulder Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Who Do You Think You Are? RT1, 9.35pm RT spoils us with several new series this evening, and of course the ubiquitous Duke of Donnybrook, Ryan Tubridy, is at the forefront in this interesting look at his family history. The Tubridys are well known, but just how involved they were in our political and cultural history is quite surprising. From poverty in Connemara to the seat of all wealth and power in the middle ages, Tubridy, pictured here doing his best to ignore the frisky couple behind him, finds that his story is full of intense contradictions, leading us from Republican volunteers right back to the heart of the British Empire. Keith Meets Keith Channel 4, 10pm Many of us fondly remember the inebriated, uniquely presented cookery programmes of Keith Floyd, but does anybody remember him disappearing from TV after collapsing in a pub two years ago? Well, Keith Allen does, and in this documentary he sets out to find the chef and presenter, last seen in France. The Irish nomad is also a staunch defender of his mother tongue, hence Broken Cro Heart Briste at the Fringe Interview by Daragh Reddin Irish is a beautiful, poetic language full of nature- soaked terms, but just dont come to it looking for terms of airy-fairy sweetness and light Tell us a little bit about Broken Cro. Broken Cro Heart Briste is an attempt to see if you can put on a play 50 per cent in one language, but entirely understandable in another. It tells the story of a confused, alienated Irish teacher trying to communicate with his students, and in particular with one frail young girl. The play explores the relationship between the teacher and his student, between the Irish language and the audience. Youre notoriously pro-gaeilge and the promotional photos show you wielding a chainsaw should non-Irish-speakers feel nervous about attending? Irish is somewhat an embattled, embittered, language like a wounded animal it needs to come out fighting with every weapon it has at its disposal, but at heart its just a frightened little child. There is certainly no reason to be nervous. The play will be understandable to English speakers. The play will be structured in the form of a class so all the words and terms will be clearly presented in the course of the show. Is the cross-dressing component integral to the show or were you just looking for an excuse to don a fetching blue dress? That would be an ecumenical matter. I suppose I could answer that question a little more accurately but it would require a psychiatrists couch and about 78 in- depth counselling sessions. Are you willing to foot the bill? Can Irish poetry express heartbreak better than English? Unfortunately yes. Much like Klingon, Irish can express pain, suffering, misery and just about every other negative feeling know to man 78,000 times better than English can. Irish is a beautiful, poetic language full of nature-soaked terms, but just dont come to it looking for terms of airy-fairy sweetness and light. Youve made documentaries with your brother Ruan. Any sibling rivalry? I spent seven years doing that. They were some of the best years of my life, but certainly we me to go four miles out of my way on a detour around him, and a snake tried to take a stab at me in Tanzania. Dream holiday destination? Vilcabamba, near Loja in southern Ecuador, a hidden valley of longevity and natural abundance on the Ecuadorian-Peruvian border. Which shows are you hoping to catch at the Fringe? Spoonful Of Silence by Entre Le Mots a French woman invites you into her kitchen, serves rose petal tea and tells you her story; Basin by Anu Productions a woman returns to her home in the Blessington Street Basin and tells you the history of the house and her memories theres a real buzz about this show; One Penny Operas by Myriad Dance artists and audience come together to create a piece of dance. Petrifying and unmissable. Manchn Magans surreal bilingual play Broken Cro Heart Briste runs at Filmbase today until Saturday. But there are parts that I will always associate with moments of sublime fraternal closeness. Youve three travel books under your belt. Whats been your best and worst experiences abroad? My best experience was living in a remote hovel in the Himalayas with no running water or electricity. I spent five months there reflecting, meditating and going slowly insane. My first travel experience was by far my worst six months across Africa in the back of an ex-army truck. We experienced profound hardship and suffering in the Congo, having all our money and passports stolen, going without food and water, and becoming infected with illnesses. Have you ever been attacked by an animal? I was chased by a panther in northern India, a hippo got very cantankerous in Zambia and forced 14 metrolife Monday, September 14, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
