But Lemonhead-in-chief Evan Dando puts a singular spin on this hoary institution, with a new record that finds fresh things to say about old songs. Featuring dreamy interpretations of music by Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen and, er, Christina Aguilera, Varshons highlights the grunge icons facility as arranger and guitarist whilst also reminding us that, despite the ravages of time and a well publicised battle with drug addiction, his remains one of the prettiest croons in alt.pop. To those of a certain age, of course, it seems only yesterday when Dando was the underground scenes pre-eminent male totty and The Lemonheads a quietly-spoken alternative for those who found the primal shrieking of Nirvana, Pixies et al a tad too full-on. With iconic songs such as Its A Shame About Ray and Into Your Arms, The Lemonheads proved that indie-rock could be at once cathartic and easy on the ears. And of course, it was another cover version their sublime, tingle inducing version of Simon And Garfunkels Mrs Robinson, that made them stars in the first place. After falling downstairs and into a coma, he awakes four years later, incontinent and horrified to discover Cindis now a Playboy model. Cue inevitable comedy road trip, culminating in Hugh Hefner delivering the immortal line: Theres a bunny deep inside every woman. All this by way of pooping, horny Eastern European lesbians, close-ups of mutated genitalia and more pooping. None of which is funny. Youd have to be drunk, 12 years old or as witless as Tucker to want to see this. Hopefully not all three. AS The Clancy Brothers enjoyed huge success in their prime, outselling the Beatles during the folk revival of the 1960s, but to some they represented the worst aspects of stage-Irishness, right down to their attire of matching woolly jumpers. This biopic tries to shed some light on Liam, the youngest Clancy brother, from his Tipperary upbringing to success in America, combining footage of the band on the Ed Sullivan show and in small venues with reminiscences from Clancy himself. What emerges is an interesting insight into the mind of a man who became overwhelmed by rocknroll excess while trying to portray the folkiest of folk singers. Clancy comes across as a hugely intelligent and honest man, a fascinating mix of wisdom and naivete that director Alan Gilsenan draws out well. The film seems overlong though, particularly in the first half when there is little musical accompaniment. Those not familiar with the music will come away none the wiser, which is a shame, but this is still a captivating story of one mans struggle with the world, and as such is worthy of a folk song of its own. Adam Hyland HAVE A GO City Chase Dublin Zorbing in St Anns Park... eating tripe in the Civic Amphitheatre... performing before a panel of judges in the National Concert Hall... it can only mean the return of City Chase Dublin. Lucy White While he started off playing guitar in church, it wasnt long before UK DJ/producer Quest became interested in dance music. He got his first set of decks just as 2-step garage exploded in London at the end of the 1990s. Quest DJed with a number of garage crews, but decided to focus on music production as violence started to engulf the scene. To date, he has put out two acclaimed releases on the respected Deep Medi Musik, run by Mala from Digital Mystikz. Fusing soulful Detroit sounds with gritty drums and rolling basslines that make nods to his two-step background, Quests sound is a fresh fusion of diverse styles. Tonight, Quest, Mud, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, 10 This weekends line-up at Pogo caters to a wide range of tastes. DJ/producer Mano Le Tough begins a new residency at the club; with releases on labels including District Of Corruption and Prins Thomas Internasjonal, expect him to play everything from stripped-back techno to spacey disco. The stage area plays host to Legion Of Two, the side- project from Decals Alan OBoyle and David Lacey (pictured). The duo will be performing the droning electronic sounds that featured on their acclaimed debut album, Riffs, released on Planet Mu this year. Finally, disco DJ Louis Scully launches his Diskotekken night in the clubs new Mezz space, playing music from the 1970s to the present day. Tomorrow, Mano Le Tough/Legion Of Two/Diskotekken, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, 8 to 10 Dublin techno DJ Sunil Sharpe steps out of his comfort zone for his long-awaited debut at Lunar Disko this weekend. Barry Donovan and Andy Doyles night is the only regular event in the capital that provides a credible platform for underground electro and the contemporary wave of Italo Disco and Chicago-influenced jacking house. Its no surprise then that Sharpe plans to leave his tough techno records at home and instead perform a set consisting of classic and modern-day Chicago and acid tracks. Support comes from Kenny Hanlon, blogger extraordinaire and one of Dublins most tasteful purveyors of deep house.
