Imad Aqel, is the first feature film produced by the Islamist Hamas and the title is the name of a Palestinian militant whom Israel held accountable for the deaths of 13 soldiers and settlers. In accordance with strict Muslim tradition, men and women sat in separate sections of the theatre to view what Hamas officials termed the Cinema of Resistance, referring to a fight against Israeli occupation. Imad Aqel, which cost 84,000 to make, was written by a senior leader of Hamas Mahmoud al-Zahar. Aqel was killed at the age of 22 by Israeli soldiers who surrounded his Gaza hideout in 1993. Director Majed Jendeya said he hoped to screen the film at Cannes. TVs Idol drops rape stunt DJ A DJ was dumped as a judge from Australian Idol yesterday as a backlash continued over a radio stunt in which a teenage girl hooked up to a polygraph revealed she had been raped. On last weeks Kyle and Jackie O Show, a 14-year-old girl was hooked up to a lie detector and asked on air about her sexual history, at her mothers request. When the girl revealed she had been raped when she was 12, the shows co-host Kyle Sandilands responded: Is that the only experience youve had? His reaction caused a furore that led to Sandilands apologising to the girl. Prime minister Kevin Rudd said he was distressed at the way the girl had been treated. Network Ten, broadcaster of Australian Idol, said Sandilands radio image was out of step with the shows family-style audience. Urbanites are still drinking despite fear of recessionHANGOVERS may induce the wrath of grapes but we Irish continue to be glut- tons for punishment, a new survey has revealed. More than two-thirds of Metros Urban Life panel are buying the same amount of alcohol or more this year, com- pared with 2008, according to the poll which questioned 1,185 Dubliners. Less than a quarter of respondents claimed to be buying a little less booze this year while just one-in-ten admitted to spending much less cash on alcohol. When questioned where they enjoyed drinking, it appeared there was little dif- ference between the numbers of those drinking at home or in the pub. Twenty- nine per cent of respondents said they liked having a drink with dinner in their homes, compared to 30 per cent who cited the pub as their preferred location. And as people continue to feel the ef- fects of the recession, either at work or in the dole queues, one-fifth of Urbanites admitted to drinking alcohol at home af- ter a stressful day. Twenty-four per cent of people freely admitted that they simply love drink- ing, 17 per cent said a hangover is part of a night out while the same amount said they really enjoyed their first drink after a day at work. Despite this, 43 per cent of people said they would actively curb my drinking if I think Ive had too much. Thirty per cent of people said they were aware of their recommended weekly al- cohol intake while one-third of Dublin- ers claimed they would say some- thing to a friend or family member if I thought they had drunk too much. Some respondents owned up to kicking the habit, albeit for a few weeks or so, and for a variety of reasons. More than a fifth of those surveyed gave up drink for a month, with 41 per cent saying they had quit alcohol for three months or more.
