D Tuesday, August 4, 2009 METRO 11 ByColmKelpie Hotel guests locked in in fridge by armed men A GANG of masked armed men stormed a luxury hotel and locked two guests in a kitchen fridge while they raided cash tills yesterday. The five men, brandishing iron bars, axes and hurley sticks, burst into the Arklow Bay Hotel in Co Wicklow just before 5am and tried to gain ac- cess to the main safe. During the commotion they were confronted by the night porter and two guests who woke up. Owner Brian Brennan said the raid- ers grabbed the couple and locked them up. These people arrived out of the room and they were accosted, tied up and locked in one of the fridges in the main kitchen, he said. A fright- ening and harrowing experience. It is understood the robbery lasted around half an hour and the gang es- caped with a small amount of cash, thought to be a few hundred euro, in a 4x4 belonging to the couple who were locked up and another vehicle. The night porter, who was also tied up in the kitchen area, managed to free himself and the captive couple. Garda said there were no reports of injuries and no guns were used in the raid. An investigation is under way. Second term: mahmoud ahmadinejad gets his second term IRANS supreme leader formally endorsed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for a second term as president yesterday. Several senior political figures reportedly shunned the ceremony where Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave his official seal of approval and he received an awkward kiss on the shoulder from Mr Ahmadinejad. Two former presidents as well as defeated pro-reform candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi did not attend the ceremony. Mr Ahmadinejad is now set to take the oath of office on Wednesday amid claims of fraud in the June 12 election. More than 100 people are facing trial for involvement in post-election protests.
