Pirates get $2.7m deal SOMALI pirates holding a German ship said they had received multi- million-dollar ransom yesterday. We have taken $2.7million (1.9m) ransom for Hansa, said pirate Abdi from Haradhere. We are now dividing the money. We shall get down (off the ship) soon, he added. The German- flagged container vessel Hansa Stavanger was captured about 400 miles (645 km) off the southern Somali port of Kismayu on April 4. It had a crew of five Germans, three Russians, two Ukrainians and 14 Filipinos on board. The release of the 20,000-tonne ship, was expected last week but it was delayed after the pirates demanded a higher ransom. A dozen people have already been infected with pneu- monic plague, a highly contagious deadly lung disease, and there are fears of it spreading farther afield. The World Health Organization said it was in close con- tact with authorities and that measures taken so far to treat and quarantine sickened people were appropriate. The man who died was identified only as Danzin, 37, from Ziketan, the stricken town in Qinghai province. Dan- zin was a neighbour of the first person who died, a 32- year-old herdsman whose name was not given. Another ten people, mostly relatives of the first dead man, were infected and undergoing isolated treatment in hospital. Ziketan has been sealed off and a team of experts have been sent to the area, warning that anyone with a cough or fever who visited the town since mid-July should seek hospital treatment. A food seller called Mr Han at the Crystal Alley Market in Ziketan said authorities have said homes and shops should be disinfected and residents should wear masks when they go out. People are so scared. There are few people on the streets, Mr Han said by telephone. Pneumonic plague is spread through the air and can be passed from person-to-person through coughing. It is caused by the same bacteria that occurs in bubonic plague the Black Death that killed an estimated 25million peo- ple in Europe during the Middle Ages. People are so scared. Few are on the streets
